The industry situation of the wood products export business

The wood industry export is a traditional advantageous export sector in China, covering various categories such as logs, boards, plywood, wood trimmings, and home wood products. It has long relied on a complete processing industry chain and high-cost-performance production capacity to occupy an important share in global wood product trade. Unlike ordinary export categories, the wood industry export is greatly affected by resource policies, international compliance, shipping costs, and regional demand fluctuations. The industry threshold and refined operation requirements are higher.
From the supply chain perspective, domestic wood industry raw materials are highly dependent on imports, with major sources concentrated in regions such as Russia, New Zealand, and the Baltic countries in Europe. In recent years, many countries have successively introduced policies such as restrictions on log exports and tariff hikes, coupled with fluctuations in international logistics freight rates, causing continuous fluctuations in raw material costs, which directly compress the profit margins of small and medium-sized export enterprises. The industry has thus shown a clear transformation trend, with the simple export of logs and rough processing of boards gradually being eliminated. High-value-added customized boards, deep processing wood products, and finished home accessories have become the main export products.
Compliance is currently the biggest operational difficulty and core competitiveness in the wood industry export. The mainstream market supervision in Europe and the United States is becoming increasingly strict, especially the EU's EUDR forest no-cutting regulations, which require all imported wood products to be traceable and verifiable to prevent the circulation of illegally harvested timber. At the same time, markets in the United States, Southeast Asia, etc., also continuously strengthen quarantine and environmental protection standard audits. Many enterprises have encountered problems such as cargo detention, return shipments, and fines due to incomplete documentation, lack of traceability chains, and non-compliance with formaldehyde environmental protection parameters. Compliance ability has become the foundation for enterprises to establish themselves.
The demand structure of the market is also continuously changing. The mature markets in Europe and the United States have stable demand, focusing on high-quality and environmentally friendly engineering boards and home wood products, with strict requirements for product craftsmanship, certification, and packaging details. While emerging markets in India, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia rely on infrastructure and urbanization construction, the demand for boards and building wood forms continues to rise, becoming a new growth breakthrough point for the wood industry export. Overall, the global wood industry market shows a differentiated pattern of "emerging markets emphasizing quality, and mature markets emphasizing cost-effectiveness".
In terms of industry development trends, the traditional low-price and high-volume extensive export model has become outdated. Currently, leading enterprises generally shift to refined operations. On one hand, they deeply focus on cross-border e-commerce channels, single reliance on offline exhibitions, and precisely connect with small overseas buyers; on the other hand, they focus on product upgrades, emphasizing new types of green, anti-corrosion, and moisture-proof engineered wood. In the future, enterprises with complete traceability systems, stable supply chains, standardized quality control, and professional compliance capabilities will be able to continuously seize market share in the fierce international competition.
